This weekend, as always, I watch movies for releasing stress from work. Haha, this method is both effective and enjoyable for me.
So this Saturday, I watched the movie about Jim Morrison of The Doors. Val Kilmer as Jim Morrison? I couldn't imagine it at first, but after an hour and 45 minutes, hmmm, I'd say Val Kilmer gave a convincing, in fact an excellent portrayal of The Door's frontman Jim Morrison. Although the problem lies in what Kilmer was portraying. A lot of people near Jim Morrison, including his surviving band mates say that the movie is far from who Jim Morrison really was. Oliver Stone had shown his own imagination of who Morrison was, a picture of who Jim was not, according to The Doors members. Jim was a gentle poet and a funny guy, but in the movie, he was shown to be a drunk, always with a bottle in his hand. In all biopics, we can't always expect exact events as they happened but in this movie, there were just too many inaccuracies.
Jim Morrison was said to be a genius, said to have an IQ of 149. He wrote poetry and films which were discovered and published after his death. He had many women in his life, but the most prominent was his long-time partner Pamela Courson whom he lived with even before his fame and fortune. After he died, he left all his estate and property to her. She followed him after 3 years with the same cause of death - drug overdose.
She was only 27. After she died, her parents got the rights to Morrison's poetry and properties and it was at this time that Morrison's parents tried to contest for the rights to Jim's properties. Pamela was recognized to be Jim's common law wife, and upon her death, her parents naturally got what she had. Then, there was Patricia Kennealy, a woman Jim married in a Celtic Pagan ceremony. A Presbyterian priest witnessed the wedding and the document the couple signed, but they failed to submit the documents to the state for official recognition.
After I watched this movie, I felt that it was such a waste that a talented person was lost because of illegal drugs. He was so young and he was so talented. Like most famous singers who died of OD, he was only 27 years old.The Doors are famous for the songs Light My Fire, The End, Break On Through (To The Other Side) and many others.
Val Kilmer is no doubt a great actor, but I'll give the movie 3 popcorns out of five. Too much emphasis on the drinking, the drug effects and the Indian guy. I think Morrison's life may be more than that.
